2021 Virtual SouperBowl of Caring ProjectTrinity Lutheran Church in Westbrook Maine had to come up with a new idea to promote this year's SouperBowl of Caring. Without having a regular Sunday School program or students due to COVID restrictions. we were unable to follow our annual tradition for this project. We used to have a Soup Luncheon on this day and we had to find a new way to do the project. We set up a display in our only entrance to the church so we could promote our new way of Virtually participating. We selected a new organization that we are very involved with. Family Promise is a nationwide organization that helps homeless families in transition to find housing. With all the restrictions the organization had asked participating churches to help support individual families in place of what was a 4 times a year weekly rotation commitment that we did to partner with another church down the street that provided the housing. We would provide the meals, serve, clean up and entertain the children until bedtime. Volunteers would also stay overnight and prepare breakfast in the morning before the families would be transported back to the Portland YMCA where the families would be able to have the children attend school and the parents would have resources to help find jobs and housing. When Covid happened nearly a year ago, the program guidelines changed and participating churches were asked to help support families that were able to find housing. We have 2 families that we support and this year we chose them for the recipient. We asked our congregation for donations or either cash, checks or grocery store gift cards. The outcome was well received and we collected $500 in donations and $250.00 in grocery gift cards. With attendance down because of restrictions we were still able to participate in a Virtual way with having the display, emails and handouts to explain how we were doing the project this year. We are pleased and Family Promise has already sent us a "Thank You" for what we were able to accomplish.
